Recently, The National Transport Authority working alongside Cork City And County Councils released The MacCurtain Street Improvement Scheme. The planned design will restructure the core of The Victorian Quarter, at the MacCurtain/Coburg/Bridge Streets intersection, as well as the length of MacCurtain Street. Smaller changes will also take place across The V.Q., addressing traffic flow, bus lanes, lighting, and pedestrian access.

MacCurtain Street will see a widening, & beautification of footpaths on both sides of the street, and traffic flow will be changed to a 2-way system, creating a slower, safer environment. A new, central “plaza” type area will be a focal point near the middle of the street. New bus set-down areas and taxi ranks will be laid out, as well as a priority given to cyclists with new bike stands and protected lanes.

The works are expected to begin in the spring of 2021. More information can be found on the City Council’s website.
